The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Performs complex (journey-level) motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Work involves repairing or replacing worn or broken parts, performing preventive maintenance activities. and servicing motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine powered equipment. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair techniques, of safety practices and principles, of departmental policies and record-keeping procedures, and of electrical and computerized systems and emission control systems.
  • Skill in locating and diagnosing defective mechanical problems.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or GED.
  • One (1) year of related work experience in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program in automotive repair or a related field is preferred.
  • May require a certification from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.
  • May require a Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector license.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs maintenance, diagnosis, repair, or replacement of defective components on motor vehicles.
  • Performs safety and emissions inspections.
  • Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, differentials, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems.
  • Distributes motor vehicle supplies.
  • Inventories, parts and equipment.
  • Maintains records on work performed and parts used.
  • May maintain and repair heavy construction equipment.
  • May provide guidance to others.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
