About The Position

The incumbent serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator in the Transportation Section of the Facilities & Engineering Service at the VA Maryland Health Care System. This section is responsible for the transportation needs of all three campuses within the VA Maryland Health Care System, which are located within 50 miles of each other. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

Requirements

  • CDL license "Class A with passenger endorsement"
  • Valid driver's license issued by a federal, state or other recognized governmental agency.
  • Knowledge of the English language (i.e. speaking, writing, reading and comprehending) and be able to communicate to ask questions of various individuals if necessary to accomplish an assigned task.
  • Skilled in handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing and driving vehicles.
  • Familiar with operations of vehicles and be capable of parallel parking the assigned vehicle in a space in a city street environment, of difficult backing operations to docks, doors, ambulance bays, etc.
  • Know the height, width, length and weight of the vehicle in order to judge overhead and side clearances, safe braking distances and maintain safe distances between vehicles.
  • Skill and knowledge of safely loading, hauling and unloading the assigned vehicle to prevent load shifting or injuries to themselves or others.
  • General skill and knowledge of the mechanical aspects of motor vehicles in order to properly identify maintenance and repair needs and schedule or coordinate such when needed.
  • Ability to change a tire utilizing the various tools and equipment that are provided by the vehicle manufacturer and following the instructions included in the vehicle.
  • Skill and knowledge to document travel and deliveries and properly handle packages as required by the VAMHCS.

Responsibilities

  • Drive any and all motor vehicles as assigned, both on and off station, including interstate travel.
  • Operate gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles consisting of sedans, station wagons, minivans, large vans, sport utility vehicles, ambulances, light and heavy trucks, ADA compliant shuttles and motor coaches, not to exceed 38,000 pounds, over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds, throughout rural and urban areas.
  • Operate a tractor-trailer periodically.
  • Drive passenger cars, vans, mini-buses, pick-up trucks, other trucks and any vehicles not exceeding 38,000 pounds in weight with either a manual or automatic transmission.
  • Follow verbal or written directions with or without a map or another navigation device if necessary.
  • Handle the controls for starting, stopping, backing and driving vehicles.
  • Operate special-purpose accessory equipment such as wheelchair lifts.
  • Parallel park the assigned vehicle in a space in a city street environment, of difficult backing operations to docks, doors, ambulance bays, etc.
  • Safely load, haul and unload the assigned vehicle to prevent load shifting or injuries to themselves or others.
  • Maintain time schedules and routes.
  • Read a map or utilize a GPS to determine the shortest and safest route, recognize road and traffic hazards and take the necessary steps to avoid or minimize their effect.
  • Identify maintenance and repair needs and schedule or coordinate such when needed.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and routine operator-level maintenance such as monitoring fluid levels, checking tire pressure, and washing/cleaning.
  • Change a tire utilizing the various tools and equipment that are provided by the vehicle manufacturer and following the instructions included in the vehicle.
  • Document travel and deliveries and properly handle packages as required by the VAMHCS.
