About the position

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic position in the Transportation Department is responsible for performing preventive, general, and emergency repairs to all Transportation Department buses and vans. The role requires a strong knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in English. The mechanic will work under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor and is expected to maintain a clean and safe workplace while managing inventory and parts supply.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive, general, and emergency repairs to all Transportation Department owned vehicles, including buses, autos, and vans.
• Keep a clean, orderly, and safe workplace.
• Order and maintain an inventory of all necessary parts and supplies.
• Perform general and preventive maintenance on other equipment as needed.
• Assign, supervise, and train other mechanics as directed.
• Use all types of common hand and electrical tools, including specialty tools used in vehicle repair.
• Observe safety regulations and procedures in the use of heavy-duty shop machines, overhead hoists, extension ladders, vehicle lifts, and chemical uses.
• Read and decipher instructional manuals and MSDS chemical sheets, and report verbally and in writing to the Department Manager.
• Perform snow and ice removal, overtime, and on-call coverage as required, along with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma is required.
• Post Secondary training in motor vehicle repair is preferred.
• Five years of experience in vehicle repair is required, with knowledge of school bus systems preferred.
• Experience in motor vehicle repair and general knowledge of mechanics and electronics is preferred.
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with necessary endorsements is required.
