About The Position

The Motor Vehicle Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of personnel, passengers, materials, equipment, or supplies as assigned. Responsible for the pickup and delivery of mail/packages throughout the county facilities affiliated with JTDC. The position requires adherence to all traffic laws, organizational policies, and safety standards while maintaining vehicles in proper working condition. The driver serves as a representative of the organization and is expected to maintain professionalism, reliability, and strong situational awareness at all times.

Requirements

High School Graduate or G.E.D.
Two-year practical work experience as a driver of a large vehicle.
Illinois Class “C” Driver’s License – CDL and Passenger endorsement
United States citizenship.
21 years of age at the time of application submission.
Ability to distinguish basic colors/shades of colors; other visual requirements as specified by area equipment.
Ability to distinguish regular/high pitched sounds and disseminate source of sound.
Working knowledge of reports submitted to the Cook County Fleet Management Department.
Knowledge of the operation and basic maintenance of a variety of motor vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations.
Knowledge of the operation of common mechanical devices on trucks and other types of equipment.
Skill in the operation and basic maintenance of a variety of motor vehicles and equipment.
Skill in the operation of common mechanical devices on trucks and other types of equipment.
Ability to read road maps and determine appropriate routes to destinations.
Ability to bend, lift heavy objects, pull or push using principles of body mechanics.
Ability to demonstrate rapid physical/mental coordination.
Ability to observe operational defects in equipment and vehicles and respond accordingly.
Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Illinois residency obtained within 90 days of date of hire.
Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check including but not limited to LEADS, CANTS, and professional references.
A result of negative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Abuse Registry.
Must have open availability to work any shift at a 24-hour facility, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must pass Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screening requirements.
Must have a clean driving record in accordance with the Cook County standards

Responsibilities

Maintains the upkeep of the JTDC fleet.
Drives vehicles to designated locations for the purpose of transporting material such as mail, equipment, furniture, and supplies.
Utilizes a thorough knowledge of driving rules and regulations and roads in areas of operation. Observes traffic signals and regulations regarding speed and parking.
Prepares daily reports providing information on mileage covered, gasoline consumed, condition of equipment, and repairs or services needed.
Maintains accurate records of vehicle usage, mileage, gas consumption, Gas key Cards, and trip logs for JTDC Fleet.
Verifies accuracy of quantities shipped as listed on shipping forms.
Inspect vehicles for safe operations for damage, sufficient gas, air pressure, and oil.
Submits, Coordinate, schedule vehicles for repairs, inspections and servicing.
Collects, manages and inventories gas receipts
Manages traffic citations in conjunction with Fleet Management
Actively attend(s) meeting with Cook County Fleet Management
Verifies all transportation drivers’ licenses for JTDC employees that are authorized to drive vehicles.
May load and unload truck as needed.
May transport internal and external personnel as authorized by management.
Ensure that vehicles are kept clean and properly maintained.
Establishes schedules while maintaining flexibility for operational needs
Maintains effective communication with Management and or in control regarding schedule delays or incidents.
Adheres to Organizational Polices including safety procedures, Confidentiality requirement and professional conduct standards
May perform emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires; and installing light bulbs and fuses.
Monitors and tracks all incidents in county vehicles and follow established county policy.
Performs other duties as assigned.
