The Motor Pool Supervisor/Lead Technician works under the direct supervision of the Director, Support Services. The Motor Pool Supervisor is responsible for supervising the fleet services technicians in the execution of all fleet vehicle and equipment repair. Responsible for maintaining parts/tool inventory. Manages employee’s performance through Agency approved practices. Rebuilds and overhauls engines, transmissions, carburetors, and other major vehicle components and systems. Inspects and repairs electrical and cooling systems. Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other scheduled maintenance. Performs engine tune-ups and makes required adjustments on vehicles and equipment such as forklifts and tractors. Performs paint and body work. Installs various after-market accessories and equipment. Following Fleet Focus, HHSC and DADS guidelines and regulations, records work performed, and parts used. Uses on-board and handheld electronic diagnostic equipment and a variety of other specialized tools and equipment to isolate malfunctions. Performs related work as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of motor vehicle operations and traffic safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of passenger loading and unloading procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge of the maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of stationary diesel engine repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge of vehicle installed hydraulic systems.
  • Skill in the operation/driving of motor vehicles such as Full-Size Van, Wheelchair Van, Paratransit/Small Bus, truck and/or car.
  • Skill to safely maneuver vehicles into tight areas.
  • Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and to comply with written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to understand and sign the “New/Existing Employee – Driver Qualification Statement” regarding driving eligibility.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date, is required. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.
  • 2 years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and stationary engines.

Nice To Haves

  • Work experience performing vehicle preventative maintenance checks preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises technicians to ensure that the school's fleet of vehicles and equipment has an operational rate sufficient to fully support the needs of the campus.
  • Serves as the lead technician ultimately responsible for the correct fault diagnosis and repair of all vehicles and equipment.
  • Processes paperwork to accurately fulfill departmental needs in support of repair parts and supply accountability processes, maintenance records, and budget expenditures.
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, safety equipment, and test equipment to ensure safety during equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Communicates to facilitate motor pool-related business and promote productive work relationships with others.
  • Performs housekeeping duties to ensure that work areas are clean, orderly, and safe.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
