About The Position

The Massachusetts Department of State Police is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified individual to join the Fleet Section as a Motor Equipment Mechanic. This is an exciting opportunity to join the state police in a civilian capacity and to support the critical mission of the Massachusetts Department of State Police. The selected individual will perform a wide variety of regular and complicated maintenance, repair and testing work on all State Police motor vehicles and equipment. Conduct accurate and thorough inspections to diagnose mechanical issues on motor vehicles and perform automotive repairs including engine management systems, fuel management systems, transmission, electrical alignment, steering, suspension, brakes, etc.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, cranes, front end loaders, etc. of which (B) at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • A certificate or diploma from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or above, with a major in automotive shop practice may be substitution for one year of the required (A) experience.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C or hoisting license.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair State Police cruisers and other motor vehicles and equipment for use by Department of State Police Personnel.
  • Troubleshoot and road test State Police vehicles and equipment to determine the repair work to be performed
  • Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical systems and components to diagnose issues accurately to repair, maintain, replace as needed, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines, transmissions, fuel injection systems, carburetors, distributors, alternators, generators, starters, differentials, four wheel and all-wheel drive systems according to specifications.
  • Inspect vehicle computer and electronic systems to repair, maintain and replace as needed.
  • Inspect vehicle braking system and components to diagnose issues accurately to repair, maintain, replace as needed.
  • Inspect steering system components to diagnose issues accurately to repair, maintain, replace as needed, including four-wheel alignments.
  • Inspect tires, repair, and replace, includes mounting and balancing.
  • Conduct routine maintenance work (replacing fluids, lubricating parts etc.) targeting vehicle safety and functionality.
  • Repair or replace broken or defective parts and fix issues.
  • Inspect Department equipment to diagnose issues accurately to repair, maintain and replace as needed, but not limited to the following: Arrow boards, message boards, trailers, gators, golf carts, hydraulic lifts / jacks, testing equipment, etc.
  • Replace damaged body parts, including bumpers fenders, hoods, trim, etc.
  • Realign car frames and repair structural damage.
  • Repair minor dents and damage, windshield, and glass replacement, buffing out scratches, and refurbishing corrosion damage.
  • Ability to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, practices, read and comprehend instructions.
  • Provide accurate estimates of a repair or maintenance job.
  • Keep logs on work.
  • Prepare damage reports for the Fleet Administrator, Fleet Crash Coordinator, and / or Chief Public Safety Vehicle Mechanics.
  • Maintain equipment and tools in good condition
  • Undertake duties and roles as assigned by the Fleet Administrator and / or Chief Public Safety Vehicles Mechanic.
