About The Position

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Powertrain and Electronics team in San Carlos, CA to support development of the Joby S4 Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle. This individual will be responsible for leading a small team of engineers to design hardware for various systems that power and control the aircraft. This position requires a relentless drive for engineering excellence and the ability to balance complex competing objectives and priorities. The position will work cross-functionally and be responsible for the entire development cycle from early architecture through production. Specifically, they will:

Requirements

  • B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering
  • 8+ years of demonstrated engineering experience - preferably “full-stack” with exposure to test, design, equipment/component selection, hands-on builds, bring-up and troubleshooting
  • Experience as a team lead, manager, or mentor of engineers
  • Proficiency with professional 3D modeling software, preferably with Catia 3D Experience
  • Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, kinematics, troubleshooting, and analysis
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Strong analytical background – able to use first principles to drive/inform design

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. in mechanical engineering
  • 12+ years of demonstrated engineering experience
  • Experience with finite element simulation tools
  • Experience with electric powertrains or other electromechanical systems (power electronics, battery systems, motors/actuators)
  • Strong fundamentals in fluid flow, thermals, structures
  • Experience with instrumentation selection/procurement and data acquisition
  • Electrical enclosure design experience
  • Experience taking design(s) through production
  • Experience managing a team in self-directed engineering projects

Responsibilities

  • Design components, subassemblies, and systems
  • Perform analysis (models/simulation) to support design decisions
  • Plan/execute development tests to support design decisions
  • Work with external vendors and internal manufacturing/fabrication teams to build hardware
  • Work with the testing team to support verification testing of hardware
  • Solve complex multi-physics engineering problems
  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers
  • Lead informal cross-functional teams/efforts
