About The Position

Mosquito Technician is a crucial role that keeps our District operations running smoothly. You will use district vehicles and equipment to perform the vital functions of our integrated pest management program. You will be working outdoors and experience some really cool natural environments. Becoming a technician is a great opportunity for those interested in gaining experience in Public Health, Field Biology, Entomology, or Community Outreach or for those looking to stay active with a rewarding summer opportunity. Hiring starts in February running through the season with flexible start and end dates. The season begins in the spring and usually ends in fall. To promote health and well-being by protecting the public from disease and annoyance caused by mosquitoes, gnats (black flies), and ticks in an environmentally safe manner. Working outdoors under general direction, locate and treat mosquito and black fly larval habitats, and perform surveillance of deer ticks according to District guidelines.

The ability to legally work in the USA, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver license
Ability to learn mosquito control methods.
Ability to read maps.
Ability to obtain an MN pesticide applicator license through provided study time and materials.
Ability to use GPS navigation, smartphone, and relevant computer software.
Read, write, and follow written and oral instructions.
Perform math and understand units of measure.
Perform moderately demanding physical activities.
Learn and perform the operation of District vehicles and mosquito control equipment.
Follow all District and OSHA safety requirements.
Be at least 18 of age.
Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.

Responsibilities

Survey for and control mosquitoes that transmit diseases
Educate the public regarding all aspects of District programs, with emphasis on ways to reduce risk of mosquito and tick-borne diseases.
Survey for and control nuisance causing mosquitoes and biting gnats.
Monitor deer tick populations and provide public education regarding Lyme and other tick-borne diseases
Locating, sampling, and treating mosquito larvae habitats including wetlands, and water-holding containers.
Performing manual labor in waterlogged uneven terrain for extended periods of time under adverse weather conditions
Calculating proper dosage and applying granular pesticides to larval habitats.
Collecting adult mosquito samples and occasionally operating ULV (ultra-low volume) sprayers to control adult populations especially if disease vectors are found.
Documenting all field activities and insecticide use in our database.
Communicating effectively with coworkers and the public.
Promoting a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.
Helping load control material into helicopters for aerial treatment of large wetlands.
Picking up tires that may be breeding mosquitoes for recycling.
Sampling and treating black fly larval populations in rivers and streams.
Sampling for deer tick populations.
Participating in outreach activities like county and state fair information booths or parades.
Performing other job-related duties as required or directed.
