About The Position

The Mosquito Technician I performs entry-level field operations involving mosquito surveillance, larval inspections, and pesticide application under supervision. This position operates mosquito control spraying equipment, collects biological data, and assists with implementing approved control strategies. The Technician I develops foundational knowledge of mosquito biology, habitats, and control methods while working independently on routine assignments with supervisory guidance available as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Familiarity with basic computer use, mobile data collection devices, or GPS applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work dependably, manage assigned tasks responsibly, and meet established performance and safety standards.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency response situations, as operational needs require.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in extreme heat and occasional adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work with insecticides and related materials in accordance with applicable safety regulations and training.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of a current Public Health Pest Control License issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), or be able to acquire the license within 1 year of employment.
  • Authorization to work legally in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or training in biology, environmental science, agriculture, public health, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in outdoor fieldwork, labor-intensive work, or environmental monitoring.
  • Experience working in wetland, marsh, or other environmentally sensitive habitats.
  • Interest in developing a career in mosquito control, public health, or environmental operations.
  • The District may provide training and support for required licensure and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect assigned areas for larval mosquito production and apply approved control measures.
  • Collect biological samples and record habitat and treatment data using computerized data loggers.
  • Operate light-duty trucks and handheld or vehicle-mounted spray equipment.
  • Safely apply pesticides in accordance with label instructions and District policy.
  • Perform source reduction activities as assigned.
  • Work independently in marshes, swamps, and remote vegetated areas.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and ensure safe operation at all times.
  • Identify mosquito habitats and common larval species under supervision.
  • Assist with adult and larval mosquito surveillance activities.
  • Operate off-road equipment and ground adulticiding equipment during peak mosquito periods.
  • Perform related duties or special projects as assigned to support District operations.
