About The Position

The Morton Schapiro Northwestern Academy Advisor is responsible for guiding and coaching academically talented high school students from Chicago Public Schools through their educational journey. This role focuses on providing academic advising, developing personalized academic plans, and facilitating access to college preparatory resources to enhance students' chances of successful matriculation to top-tier colleges and universities.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in education, school counseling, psychology or a related social science field.
  • 5+ years' work experience in a role or setting serving academically motivated, diverse populations of students and families.
  • Experience working on issues related to racial, ethnic, class, and gender equality in education.
  • Experience designing and implementing workshops and programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, higher education; with additional coursework or background in psychology and or child and adolescent development.
  • Experience as a college counselor or college admissions officer or advisor.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic advising on course selection, admissions preparation, standardized testing, financial aid, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Assist students in developing objectives and methods to meet short and long-term academic and personal goals.
  • Collaborate with students and families to navigate educational resources and opportunities.
  • Facilitate annual individual and parent/guardian meetings.
  • Monitor students' academic progress through personal contact with students, parents, and high school personnel.
  • Develop, manage, and facilitate group programming in college prep and self-regulation learning, social-emotional content workshops.
  • Support students' target college search, application, and selection process.
  • Write letters of recommendation for selective pre-college programs and college admission applications.
  • Collect and maintain student academic data, demographic data, history, and anecdotal documentation.
  • Collaborate with the program director to develop programming and implement improvements as needed.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, and orientation process for new students.
  • Build and maintain partnerships and institutional relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development to maintain knowledge of research and best practices around college access issues.
