About The Position

The Underwriting Manager must believe in, practice, and initiate all Green Brick Partners values set forth in an acronym we call HOME. They must be Honest, Objective, Mature and Efficient in how they approach their role at Green Brick Partners. The Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the underwriting department to ensure high quality, compliant loan decisions across Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA products. This role manages daily workflow, staff performance, production efficiency, and adherence to agency, investor, and regulatory guidelines. The manager serves as the escalation point for complex loan scenarios, ensures consistent application of underwriting standards, and drives operational excellence across the team.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of mortgage underwriting experience, including Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA.
  • Minimum 5 years of underwriting management or team‑lead experience.
  • BS degree in a business-related field (i.e. Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, Business).
  • Deep knowledge of DU and LP, including interpretation and documentation requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage high‑volume environments with strict deadlines.
  • Proven track record of maintaining low defect rates and strong audit performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active FHA DE and VA LAPP/SAR certifications strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the underwriting team, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Oversee daily workflow, loan assignments, and production metrics to ensure timely and accurate credit decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, investor, and agency regulations (FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional).
  • Review and approve complex loan files; provide guidance on DU/LP findings and agency overlays.
  • Maintain and enforce underwriting policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Monitor turn‑times, productivity, and pipeline aging to meet service‑level expectations.
  • Partner with processing, closing, and production teams to resolve conditions and improve loan flow.
  • Stay current on industry changes, agency updates, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits; ensure corrective actions are implemented when needed.
  • Promote a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
