About The Position

The Mortgage Underwriter – Appraisal Specialist is responsible for evaluating and underwriting all mortgage loan types offered by the client. This role ensures that all appraisals and loan decisions comply with state and federal requirements and that the client’s mortgage portfolio maintains an acceptable level of risk.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of appraisal review and mortgage underwriting guidelines.
  • Ability to manage multiple appraisals and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to apply investor, regulatory, and organizational guidelines to decision‑making.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a pipeline of appraisals, monitor due dates, and act promptly on appraisal updates and new assignments to ensure service expectations are met.
  • Communicate changes, revisions, or corrections to production staff, appraisers, and appraisal vendors after initial appraisal delivery.
  • Respond to inquiries from production staff and business units regarding appraisals in review and advanced underwriting issues; document issues in internal systems.
  • Review and issue decisions on appraisal reports, including adding conditions, issuing counteroffers, or issuing denials when necessary.
  • Review property‑related contracts and conditions, such as HOA requirements, age restrictions, private utilities, and similar factors.
  • Conduct thorough examinations of appraisal components, including supplemental appraisal forms, and document any deficiencies, repairs, or special requirements.
  • Determine the acceptability and marketability of properties to ensure sufficient collateral for the loan.
  • Use information from multiple resources—including building codes, zoning contacts, tax records, online real estate databases, member documentation, and title work—to support accurate underwriting decisions.
  • Make informed decisions on investment risk using established guidelines, and recommend denial or exception for properties that do not meet criteria.
  • Communicate professionally and proactively with appraisers, vendors, and internal partners.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and clear information based on research and underwriting knowledge.
