About The Position

The Underwriter II is responsible for evaluating credit risk and determining a borrower's ability to repay residential mortgages. This role involves analyzing complex financial data, ensuring compliance with lending guidelines, and collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes for both the bank and the borrower. The Underwriter II also handles unique borrower types and escalates complex situations as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Underwriter in a financial services or mortgage banking environment required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in jumbo underwriting to investor or organization's guidelines required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with state and federal lending regulations (i.e., Ability to Repay (ATR), RESPA, Reg B, Reg O, Reg Z, Fair Lending, etc.).
  • Familiarity with FNMA/FHLMC guidelines.
  • Computer literate with experience using Microsoft applications and mortgage industry standard software, preferably InterLink E3 or NetOxygen/Gallagher.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Strong time management skills to plan and organize a high daily loan volume.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge and exposure to funding and loan documentation is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews the loan package for completeness and verifies supporting documents for credit decisions.
  • Identifies issues and recommends resolutions within policy service level agreements.
  • Analyzes the financial capacity of borrowers through various analyses including credit and cash flow analysis.
  • Reviews stability of residency and employment, and verifies income according to established policy.
  • Documents conclusions to mitigate identified risks and supports repayment requests.
  • Sets and clears conditions accurately.
  • Interacts with RLC and Processor throughout the loan lifecycle, providing updates and assistance.
  • Updates systems with pertinent information as required.
  • Renders decisions within lending authority and submits recommendations for higher authority when necessary.
  • Originates client letters such as Commitment, Counter Offer, and Declination.
  • Certifies and provides a final Workbook to the Processor.
  • Ensures compliance with bank and regulatory guidelines.
  • Promotes a positive team environment and fosters collaboration.
  • Provides guidance and support to RLC and Processor as needed.
  • Utilizes systems to keep RLC updated on loan statuses.
  • Communicates effectively with all levels to support business units and ensure requirements are met.
  • Handles inquiries professionally and ethically, escalating problems as necessary.
  • Supports quality and customer satisfaction goals of the bank.
  • Ensures all goals and service level agreements are met.
  • Tracks and reports production statistics as defined by management.
  • Meets quality control and data integrity standards.
  • Utilizes available systems and tools effectively.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.
