About The Position

The Mortgage Loan Originator plays a key role in supporting members through exceptional service, trusted financial guidance, and strong relationship building. This position is responsible for identifying member needs and recommending appropriate credit union solutions, while evaluating, approving, and processing mortgage loans to support the growth of the credit union’s loan portfolio. In addition to mortgage expertise, the Mortgage Loan Originator actively engages in community networking and outreach to build brand awareness, strengthen partnerships, and generate new lending opportunities. This role builds strong, positive relationships with both members and community partners while ensuring all lending activities reflect the safety, soundness, and core values of the credit union.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one to two years of post-high school education in a business-related field.
  • Three years of experience in service and sales, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in Real Estate Mortgage origination or processing.
  • Strong knowledge of mortgage loan products, qualification procedures, and credit reporting systems to accurately determine applicant eligibility and address credit‑related questions.
  • Ability to market credit union mortgage products and services while building positive relationships with members, partners, and community contacts.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate with mortgage‑related professionals, contribute to a cooperative team environment, and travel to branch locations as needed.
  • Demonstrates professional communication skills (in person, phone, and writing), with the ability to present information clearly and interpret complex mortgage regulations.
  • Proficient with mortgage loan origination systems, automated underwriting tools, Microsoft Office, office equipment, and digital communication tools.
  • Must meet all state and federal requirements for NMLS registration.

Responsibilities

  • Originate first and second mortgage loans—including purchases, refinances, and pre‑qualifications—to support members in achieving homeownership and meeting real estate financing goals.
  • Meet with members to assess needs, recommend appropriate mortgage products, and guide them through the lending process from initial inquiry through closing.
  • Evaluate applicant creditworthiness by reviewing financial data, credit reports, documentation, and property appraisals to determine loan feasibility.
  • Collaborate with processors, underwriters, realtors, appraisers, and title companies to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant loan processing and closings.
  • Communicate loan decisions, explain credit findings, provide modification counseling when needed, and cross‑sell relevant credit union products.
  • Build strong relationships with community partners and industry professionals while supporting mortgage marketing initiatives and staying current on regulations, secondary market guidelines, and technology tools.
  • Maintain a professional and positive presence in the branch, reinforcing the credit union’s values through every member interaction.
