About The Position

This position reports to the Mortgage Production Manager. This role requires someone enthusiastic about educating and assisting our members with our mortgage loan products and services. The Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) is responsible for the solicitation of mortgage loans from credit union existing members, realtors, builders, and the general public. Conducts initial pre-qualification interview, completes an accurate loan application along with required documentation, and provides “Pre-Approval” notices, disclosures, and other documents as required within Credit Union Policy and Procedures. MLO will keep accurate loan records within the system of record. Conveys policies for extension of credit by Credit Union and secondary investor guidelines. The Mortgage Loan Originator must possess essential product knowledge to properly communicate products to realtors, builders, applicants, and members. An understanding of interest rates is required. Negotiates rates, fees, and terms to the applicant. Must actively listen for cross-selling opportunities of all Credit Union products and services. Meet mortgage loan scheduling and documentation requirements, and production expectations as determined by the Mortgage Department Management. Serves members, prospective members, builders, and realtors promptly and professionally.

Requirements

  • Education –No secondary degree required. High School Degree
  • As required by the Safe Act; must be licensed or registered (or have the ability to obtain prior to employment start) through the NMLS (Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System) and maintain annual renewals.
  • Minimum of 1 year of customer service experience, 1 to 3 years of experience in financial institutions or lending.
  • Understanding the foundation of determining creditworthiness and risk assessment
  • Familiarity with title reports, insurance, and appraisals.
  • Understanding of financial industry concepts, related laws, and regulations
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving skills, good analytical and financial skills
  • Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task and project manage
  • Strong interviewing skills
  • Ability to be resourceful and demonstrate critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Able to operate related computer applications, calculator, and other basic business equipment
  • Strong communication and public relations abilities.
  • Face-to-face and virtual presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and web-based applications
  • Process improvement understanding
  • Knowledge of Credit Union loan policies, products, procedures, processing, and underwriting

  • Previous credit union experience is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accessing member/nonmember questions and needs, in regards to mortgage and other credit union services.
  • Supports cross-selling efforts and solves problems.
  • Cultivate relationships with members, mortgage applicants, realtors, and builder referrals to achieve production goals set by management.
  • Interviews, gathers necessary information and processes preliminary documentation on loan requests to determine credit approval.
  • Informs members regarding loan approval, credit, money management, and financial matters.
  • Council members on loan alternatives, credit criteria, interest rates, and loan documentation in such a manner as to empower our members with decision-making criteria
  • Performs follow-up work as necessary to achieve conditional approval within established time frames and guidelines (FHA, VA, Conventional, USDA, and Non-QM).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the loan products, including FHA, VA, Conventional, USDA, Jumbo, Equity Loans, and Non-QM.
  • Notifies members and nonmembers of pre-approval or denial of loans as in relationship to credit, ratios, and loan to value.
  • Completes required records and reports credit decisions as per agency guidelines.
  • Conducts training, and presentations regarding loan programs and services to both internal and external partners.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination, with credit union personnel and with management.
  • Assists Mortgage Loan personnel; serves as a backup as needed.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Reports all member comments relating to competitive interest rates, fees, closing costs, and service complaints to the Mortgage Loan Manager, and/or VP of Real Estate and Business Lending.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and committees as required.
  • Assists with performance improvement projects
  • Attends required training and demonstrates a willingness to keep learning.
  • Maintains and projects the credit union’s professional reputation
  • Assist with mentoring of mortgage team
  • Attends required annual BSA training and required CPD and Cyber compliance training.
  • Keeps work area clean, secure, and well-maintained
  • Maintains Compliance with all regulations, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) rules and regulations, Customer Identification Program (CIP), TRID, REG-Z, and SAFE ACT rules and regulations.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned or identified.
