About The Position

Assists the Pathologist in the autopsy process, and handles remains in their preparation and release to funeral home. Responsible for specimen processing of Pathology samples utilizing the electronic lab information computer system.

Requirements

  • High school or GED required.
  • 3-5 years prior experience assisting in autopsy procedures, preparation of remains and Pathology specimen processing.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employee.
  • Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the BronxCare Health System (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.
  • Ensures that all patients, visitors, and guests, as well as co-workers, receive personalized, prompt attention and are treated with receptiveness, dignity and respect, no matter how limited the contact.
  • Is effective in maintaining and assuring the quality and appropriateness of services provided to all patients, visitors, guest and co-workers.
  • Attendance and punctuality (start of work and return to work from breaks and lunch) is maintained at the average of the employees in the department.
  • Assist Pathologists with all autopsies and prepare bodies for delivery to the undertaker.
  • Receives selected specimens and stores cadavers in mortuary refrigerators.
  • Prepare body or body parts for autopsy and clean-up of completion of autopsy.
  • Prepares and releases bodies/or body parts to the undertakers.
  • Assist in the accessioning & labeling of specimens and collect and distribute laboratory work to proper laboratory section.
  • Maintains reports and specimens logs for easy access.
  • Filing of Surgical Pathology slides, specimens and records in appropriate storage areas.
  • Clean, wash and sterilize all autopsy equipment including dissecting tables.
  • Submit a daily inventory of bodies and specimens retained in the mortuary.
  • Autoclaving of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Picks up the specimens from designated hospital area.
  • Maintain adequate supply of working garments.
  • Perform other duties as directed; i.e. Including messenger duties, telephone answering, delivery of supplies and/or mail distribution.
