About The Position

The Monitoring Technician/Unit Secretary is responsible for the on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and providing RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Works cooperatively as part of a team and under the supervision of a RN/LPN. Also performs the duties and responsibilities of a Unit Secretary as directed, providing secretarial support and care for patients and families. Communicates with nursing teammates, provider office staff, and/or other entities facilities regarding patient information, while carrying out assigned receptionist and secretarial duties.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Basic EKG training with a minimum passing score of 85%.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in a health care setting preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and understand EKGs and arrhythmias.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to maintain competency in non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) and pulse oximetry (SpO2) as appropriate.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to set priorities and organize many functions at the same time for an entire unit.
  • Flexibility and calmness required in order to perform a variety of functions in a setting which may be stressful or change unexpectedly due to a patient's condition.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates and relate to patients with varying degrees of illness.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Able to learn new software rapidly. Experience with EMR/Epic preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • EKG Monitoring Certification preferred.
  • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Responsibilities

  • Continually monitors patients on telemetry by interpreting and recording all EKG rhythms.
  • Provides direct patient care by performing patient preparation for monitoring.
  • Monitors O2 sats and blood pressure as appropriate.
  • Understands parameters indicating when to alert the supervising nurse.
  • Provides and accurately processes telemetry monitor records and other documents.
  • Ensures all patient care equipment is in safe working order prior to use.
  • Receives, greets and directs patients and visitors professionally.
  • Answers telephone and call bell promptly and in accordance with behavioral expectations.
  • Provides assistance and customer service to patients, visitors, physicians and teammates.
  • Completes all required documentation accurately and thoroughly according to unit specific standards.
  • Promotes effective communication between patients, teammates, providers, and visitors.
  • Ensures teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem solving interactions.
  • Ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for patients and staff.
  • Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
  • Procures supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental needs.
  • Completes Patient Safety Attendant training if utilized to sit with patients.
