The Centralized Monitor Technician is responsible for continuous monitoring and interpretation of cardiac rhythms of assigned patients. This position is under the administrative supervision of the Director of the Centralized Monitoring Unit (CMU) and the direct supervision of the CMU Clinical Manager, a licensed nurse. The technician must be proficient in reading cardiac rhythms, remain alert and attentive to all monitored patients, work under stressful conditions, and effectively communicate rhythm and/or vital sign deviations to the appropriate nursing staff. The role requires familiarity with hospital policies and procedures, and the employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

  • Inputs patient data and assigns patients to the appropriate cardiac monitor including admission, discharges and transfers.
  • Measures, labels, and documents rhythm strips on each monitored patient in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) per unit policy.
  • Ensures that a fellow Monitor Tech or Supervisor monitors assigned patients for bathroom and meal breaks.
  • Responds to monitored patient emergencies appropriately according to unit/facility protocols.
  • Accurately identifies and reports arrhythmias.
  • Notifies CMU Supervisor and appropriate nursing staff of any changes witnessed on the monitors.
  • Reports to the charge nurse about urgent issues once that patient's nurse has been notified.
  • Maintains all logs throughout the day ensuring they are up-to-date.
  • Exports and/or documents rhythm strips as appropriate in the EMR.
  • Recognizes life-threatening conditions and reacts appropriately to each situation.
  • Follows unit/department policy for written and/or verbal report to oncoming staff.
  • Assists in orientation, onboarding and development of new personnel.
  • Uses AIDET at all times.
  • Maintains Positive Helpful Attitude.
  • Assists with building rapport with hospital staff and nurses on floors that CMU monitors.
  • Uses and cares for equipment and supplies economically.
  • Travels as needed to hospitals to pick up and deliver equipment and batteries as needed.
  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Successful completion of CMU training course and Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation course provided by West Tennessee Healthcare within first month of hire.
  • One (1) year cardiac monitor technician experience preferred.
  • Understanding of medical terminology preferred.
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation preferred.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations preferred.
  • Visual perception and manual dexterity to perform collection procedures.
