About The Position

The Monitor Room Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Museum's 24/7 Monitor Room and the scheduling, training, and development of the security staff on the Day shift (8am-4pm), Evening Shift (4pm-12am), and the Night Shift (12am-8am). The Supervisor provides a safe and secure environment for all visitors and staff, as well as the art collection, by monitoring the activities in the museum. The Supervisor will report hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, disorderly conduct, etc., maintain order, and enforce the policies and procedures of the Walters Art Museum. The Supervisor's regular weekly schedule is Sunday-Thursday, 8am-4pm, but is an essential employee and is expected to remain on duty until properly relieved and provide back-up coverage for other shifts.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of previous experience in the security field; experience in a Museum setting preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the security principles, practices, and procedures.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certifications.
  • Proficiency with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and 2-way radio communications.
  • Background in preparing incident reports and experience using computers and standard office programs.
  • Ability to document details in a clear and concise manner.
  • Able to multitask, properly assess and respond to emergencies, and take appropriate actions while performing under pressure.
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision for all shifts in the Monitor Room, including completing monthly schedules for all three Monitor Room shifts.
  • Ensure that all shifts are aware of events and special needs on a daily basis and that all critical information is passed down from shift to shift.
  • Train all new Monitor Room officers on the camera and alarm systems and the Museum's policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of all direct reports to provide guidance, coaching, and feedback.
  • Conduct daily personnel inspections to ensure that security staff are properly equipped and dressed in the issued uniform.
  • Ensure that all policies and procedures are followed and operational requirements are met.
  • Conduct random post inspections of the museum while open to the public and during evening special events.
  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, the building structure and floorplans, and the museum's policies and procedures.
  • Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances.
  • Maintain a positive work relationship with Conservation, Registrars, and Collections Technicians.
  • Complete TSA certification to ensure proper procedures are followed during the packaging of artwork for shipment.
  • Patrol throughout the museum, monitoring the activity of visitors and staff to ensure compliance with its policies.
  • Check for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior.
  • Report all incidents to the Manager of Safety and Security.
  • Complete Incident Commander training to respond to all emergencies or hazardous situations.
  • Prepare written reports of damage and unsafe conditions and ensure that incident reports are completed as necessary by the end of the shift.
  • Respond to visitor related situations as necessary, ensuring that all issues are resolved in a professional and customer-friendly manner.
  • Maintain a current operating knowledge of the alarm systems and CCTV systems.
  • Answer telephone and radio transmissions; monitor activity in and around the museum to ensure safety.
  • Respond to the special needs of the hard of hearing, persons with mental or physical challenges, or visually challenged visitors or staff.
