About The Position

As a Molecular Biologist II at Battelle, you will be part of a dynamic team engaged in cutting-edge research across various biological disciplines. This role involves leveraging your expertise in molecular biology and microbiology to design genetic constructs for the expression and production of functional proteins. You will support laboratory studies, mentor staff, and lead projects that enhance capabilities and develop novel technical approaches, all while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team committed to advancing scientific knowledge.

Requirements

  • PhD or MS and >2 years or BS and >5 years of experience in a relevant biological discipline.
  • Expertise designing and engineering recombinant molecules (e.g., plasmid design, cloning, transformation, etc.) for bacterial and viral applications using methods like: Gibson, Golden Gate, TA, or MoClo cloning methods.
  • Proficiency with open source cloning software tools, such as SnapGene, Geneious, or others.
  • Proven ability to conduct experiments according to standard operating procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment and train less experienced staff.
  • U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.
  • Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory to perform assigned duties including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 50 pounds, and work in the proximity of hazardous/infectious materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).
  • Expertise in using plasmid editing software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and creation of constructs/plasmids for genetic engineering utilizing cloning software tools such as SnapGene, Genious, or others.
  • Adapt and develop methods to conduct DNA isolation, purification, and quantification, as well as PCR amplification.
  • Develop new protocols (e.g., Gibson or Golden Gate cloning) for the design and expression of recombinant proteins from engineered microorganisms.
  • Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverables with guidance from senior scientists.
  • Independently troubleshoot experiments using experience and scientific literature.
  • Mentor lab personnel in microbiology, molecular biology, and cell culture.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Follow established safety guidelines to safely work with hazardous/infectious (RG2) materials.
