About The Position

Under the direction of the Area Supervisor, the mold capper cleans, caps, repairs, beefs-up and otherwise prepares ceramic molds for pouring. Under the direction of the Area Supervisor, the autoclave / furnace operator melts wax from molds, fires molds, reclaims wax, operates auxiliary equipment as necessary and performs miscellaneous related duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Mold Cleaning : Transfers molds from cart to cart, as required; moves carts from position to position within the work area according to production needs; removes molds to work table and returns them to carts. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Follows prescribed procedures to locate mold defects, including cracks, holes, chips, etc.; mixes and applies ceramic material to repair such defects. Follows verbal and written instructions to clean, shake and cap molds properly; uses knife, file, brush, air pressure, vacuum machine, etc. to remove excess ceramic and dirt from molds. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Repairs broken molds; patches holes or broken pouring cups by forming and fitting pieces of ceramic or by using any other techniques as required. Uses band saw or cutting wheel to cut gussets and other ceramic materials to be used in beefing, repairing and preparing the molds. Applies extra dips and/or other proper amounts of ceramic materials to strengthen or “beef up” certain molds according to written or verbal instructions; mixes and helps maintain vats of ceramic slurry used in the process. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Wax Meltout and Firing Furnace : Melts wax from the molds in the Autoclave; secures ready molds from dehumidifying room; transfers molds from carts to autoclave trays; loads one or more autoclaves with loaded trays, using hydraulic hoist or other mechanical device; engages steam pressure to melt wax; directs melted wax to reservoir, removes trays from autoclave and transfers molds to carts; wipes residue from molds. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Fires molds in furnace: loads molds onto firing grids; pushes grids into firing furnace with hydraulic pusher, following established cycle times and temperatures; removes grids from furnace and transfers molds to carts. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Transfers melted wax from reservoir to wax hopper. Operates auxiliary equipment as necessary: Fires molds. Positions molds on slab, covers with protective material and fires. Frequent lifting molds up to 80 lbs. (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Performs miscellaneous related duties: Removes metal plates from mold bottoms. Changes filter papers. Maintains production tallies and prepares fill-in type reports. Reports faulty products and processes to the Foreman. Performs other related duties as required, such as maintaining simple records and tallies, keeps equipment in proper condition and maintaining work area in a clean and orderly condition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • At least one year manufacturing experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate production information both in writing and verbally
  • Ability to complete required production reports and SPC charts
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Regular attendance and the ability to work weekday and weekend overtime

Responsibilities

  • Directs melted wax to reservoir, removes trays from autoclave and transfers molds to carts
  • Wipes residue from molds
  • Fires molds in furnace
  • Loads molds onto firing grids
  • Pushes grids into firing furnace with hydraulic pusher, following established cycle times and temperatures
  • Removes grids from furnace and transfers molds to carts
  • Transfers melted wax from reservoir to wax hopper
  • Operates auxiliary equipment as necessary
  • Fires molds
  • Positions molds on slab, covers with protective material and fires
  • Removes metal plates from mold bottoms
  • Changes filter papers
  • Maintains production tallies and prepares fill-in type reports
