About The Position

The Tool Maker position involves training and mentoring fellow Tool Makers, ensuring timely completion of jobs, and collaborating with a cross-functional team of Tooling Engineers, CNC Machinists, and EDM Machinists. The role requires independent assembly of molds of varying complexity to meet customer approval, planning and scheduling jobs to meet delivery timelines, and troubleshooting mold issues. The Tool Maker will perform inspection procedures, wire complete runner-less molds, calculate timing for rack-and-gear molds, and operate shop equipment safely. Clear communication with outside vendors and participation in tool design reviews are also essential aspects of the job.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid identification and authorization to legally work in the United States.
  • 2 years of technical or trade school with an emphasis on tool making.
  • 5+ years of mold making experience in a tool shop environment, including extensive precision surface and form grinding.
  • At least 2 years’ experience with CNC milling, EDM, and Wire EDM.
  • Strong technical math skills (geometry, trigonometry, mechanical drafting).
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with colleagues, supervisors, and customers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Mastercam software.
  • Proven ability to build injection molds safely, efficiently, and to customer specifications.
  • Deep understanding of EDM and CNC processes.
  • Proficient knowledge of all processes within a mold shop.
  • Skilled in interpreting 3D CAD designs and 2D prints.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring tools.
  • Able to walk, climb stairs, and lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Strong hand dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Able to operate forklifts and overhead hoists safely.

Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor fellow Tool Makers as needed.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring jobs are completed on time.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of Tooling Engineers, CNC Machinists, and EDM Machinists.
  • Independently assemble molds of any complexity to meet customer approval.
  • Plan and schedule jobs to meet quoted delivery timelines.
  • Disassemble and troubleshoot mold issues and develop cost- and time-effective action plans.
  • Perform all inspection procedures efficiently with no supervision.
  • Wire complete runner-less molds independently.
  • Calculate timing for rack-and-gear molds and assemble molds with hydraulic cylinders.
  • Safely operate all necessary shop equipment without supervision.
  • Clearly communicate scope of work to outside vendors and prepare necessary prints or sketches.
  • Operate a computer with Mastercam software.
  • Help develop and document new procedures for increased efficiency on machine tools.
  • Always wear appropriate safety equipment for the task or equipment in use.
  • Participate in tool design reviews and quoting activities.
  • Troubleshoot molds at the press.
  • Order components needed for mold repair and maintenance.
  • Fit parting lines and shutoffs for injection and LSR molds.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the lead.
