Mohs Surgery Technician provides supportive patient care functions for Mohs Surgery Department in the clinic Surgical Area. Provides supportive patient care functions under the supervision of a Mohs Surgeon, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients and families according to legal, organizational, and professional standards. Some duties may be delegated to the Mohs Surgery Technician by the Surgeon. This position requires additional duties which include administration of injectables and or other high-level skill performance. The Mohs Surgery Technician requires additional duties which include demonstrating knowledge and scribing of medical terminology to assist in documentation during surgical office procedures. In addition, the technician may be asked to administer injectables and/or other high level skill performance: Set-up/assist with procedures, sterile field, cosmetic procedures, removal of sutures, sterilize instruments, and manage pathology log to make sure all results received and given to patients and treatments are done.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program or school
High School diploma or GED from an accredited program
Certified or Registered as a Medical Assistant, or Surgical Technician
1+ years of related experience as a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant OR 1+ years of related surgical assistant experience
BLS Certification through American Heart Association
Complete department-specific program modules for medical assistants
Able to complete the review/skill validation program within 90 days of hire into this role
Able to use equipment and related supplies for selected patient population
Windows based computer skills
Basic Medical & Nursing terminology

Nice To Haves

1+ years of experience in a Mohs or Dermatology clinic or related department
Ambulatory Care experience
EPIC experience

Responsibilities

Demonstrates knowledge and skill needed to provide safe and effective care to facilitate the Mohs Surgical Department provider's practices which includes: Injection of Lidocaine for local anesthesia in superficial areas Surgical site scrub Vital signs Preparation and procedural set up for dry dressings Sterile fields set up for MOHS procedure Suture removal up to 10 cm Documentation of all medications and procedures Knows how to access the designated resource MD or RN Seeks clarification or guidance with questions related to medication administration from licensed staff
Transport patient within facility as needed
Perform CPR as needed and assist during times of emergency
Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon
Assists Mohs surgeon throughout procedure with instruments and providing hands on assistance according to prescribed standards
Dress and provide wound care instruction for the surgery site
Assists with Cosmetic procedures, such as Botox, Chemical Peels, etc.
Able to assist with Laser skin procedures
Compiles and prepares surgical packs
Runs autoclave as needed
Document observations related to health status and report findings
During Surgical procedure takes photos of surgical stages for Epic System- Haiku Application
The Scribe works to facilitate patient flow through ambulatory clinics and ensure an accurate and complete medical record for each patient
In accordance with policy, prepares and assembles medical record documentation/chart for physician prior to and during patient visit.
Ensures all documentation is accurate and timely
The Scribe assists the medical provider by accompanying them during the surgical procedure
Review doctor's schedule, abstract as needed, print PVS for each patient and request other relevant information needed for patient's visit that day
Prepares and submits patient documents for scanning
Monitor assigned in basket and complete work as needed-Overdue Results/Letters
Schedule appointments and assist patients with specialty referrals and radiology testing
Provide pre-printed patient educational material as directed by provider
Proper disposal of confidential patient information -daily
Follows HIPAA policy and procedures regarding patient confidentiality
Monitor supplies, medications and forms and notifies appropriate staff when reorder needed
Remove and tag broken equipment and notifies coordinator, supervisor, or manager
Cleans exam rooms daily and documents on log
Monitors supplies for expiration date and restock to par levels
Perform sterilization of instruments and complete logs (assignment based on completion of sterilization class and delegation by appropriate nursing staff)
Attends staff meetings
Maintain a clean and organized work area with a minimum of personal items
Complete daily logs as assigned by nursing staff: Waived testing (i.e., glucometer, urine dipstick and urine pregnancy logs) CLIA standards Refrigerator and room temperature logs Eye wash station Other QA logs
Performs accurate, legal, & ethical documentation
Maintain patient confidentiality
Practice OSHA safety standards with proper disposal of biohazard waste
Uses frequent hand washing or hand sanitizer (up to ten times before have to wash hands with soap and water unless hands visibly soiled) to prevent and control the spread of disease within the clinical setting
Uses gloves and PPE as needed
Uses aseptic or sterile technique as needed
Verify equipment has a current PM label before use
Identifies and reports potential barriers for the safe provision of patient care and maintains a safe patient environment
Works with patients to achieve excellent customer service and high levels of satisfaction
Practices mutual respect among all members of the healthcare team
Works with other staff to promote an efficient and effective healthcare team
