The Mohs Histology Technician is responsible for the preparation, cutting, staining, and microscopic mounting of tissue specimens from Mohs micrographic surgical procedures. This position plays a critical role in supporting the Mohs surgeon by ensuring high-quality, accurate histological slides for timely diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

  • Accurately prepare and process Mohs tissue specimens following standard protocols and physician preferences.
  • Perform cryosectioning using a cryostat to produce high-quality tissue slides.
  • Stain, cover slip, and label slides for microscopic evaluation by the Mohs surgeon.
  • Ensure proper orientation and mapping of tissue samples to maintain accurate margins.
  • Maintain specimen identification integrity at all times to prevent sample errors.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of laboratory equipment, especially the cryostat.
  • Follow all OSHA and CLIA regulations for specimen handling and laboratory safety.
  • Document and maintain quality control and quality assurance logs.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of lab supplies and order as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with the Mohs surgeon and medical staff to support patient flow and timely treatment.
  • Assist in training or orienting new staff in histology processes, if needed.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training in Mohs histotechnology.
  • Perform other related tasks or duties as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in Mohs histology preferred; dermatology experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with cryostats, staining techniques, and tissue mapping.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification (HT/HTL-ASCP) is preferred but not always required depending on state and facility.
