About The Position

A modular pipefitter (or industrial pipefitter) job involves laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining pipe systems, often in industrial settings such as chemical plants or refineries. Key responsibilities include reading technical drawings, using a variety of tools, and performing leak tests. Under direction, the pipefitter performs work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of process facilities and systems, high pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps, boilers and furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment and steam operated equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with accepted trade practices; may be called on to do routine welding; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does related work as required. Lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and maintain piping, piping systems, and equipment for steam, hot water, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems. Apply knowledge of system operation, building plans, and work drawings in performing tasks. Usually work with large pipes that are frequently secured by means of flanges (rim or collar) and/or welding.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in work involving a variety of layout, installation, and maintenance tasks
  • Proficiency in using various hand and power tools, including cutting torches, threading machines, grinders, and beveling machines.
  • Ability to operate equipment like forklifts and man lifts is also common.
  • Strong understanding of pipe fitting processes, materials, welding symbols, safety procedures (OSHA 10-hour certification is often preferred), and an ability to read technical manuals.
  • Good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to pass drug test as mandated by the Saulsbury Industries and Department of Transportation antidrug program
  • Must attend and successfully complete Saulsbury Industries safety training education
  • Attends safety meetings and specialty training as directed by management

Responsibilities

  • Read Blueprints and Drawings: Interpret complex mechanical and structural drawings, isometric drawings, and specifications (including P&IDs and ISOs) to determine project requirements and the sequence of installation.
  • Fabricate and Assemble: Select the specified type and size of pipe (carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, PVC, etc.) and related materials. Cut, thread, bend, and assemble pipes and fittings using various methods such as welding, soldering, brazing, fusing, or cementing.
  • Install Systems: Mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceilings, and secure pipes to structures using clamps, brackets, and supports. Install components like valves, couplings, and related equipment (pumps, heat exchangers, etc.).
  • Test and Maintain: Test the installed piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure (hydrostatic or pressure tests) and observing gauges to ensure integrity and safety. Perform maintenance and repair work on existing systems.
  • Safety and Work Environment: Follow strict health and safety guidelines and maintain a clean and safe work environment. This often involves working at heights, in confined spaces, and lifting heavy materials (up to 50 lbs). Uses basic knowledge of regulations and requirements.
  • Determines methods and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets in accord with approved trade practices.
  • Interprets graphic symbols on piping drawings.
  • Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems, applying knowledge of system operation, and following blueprints.
  • Installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot, compression, and soldered joints
  • Perform lockout and tag procedures to secure and deactivate equipment, and checks local point to ensure proper lockout procedures are used.
  • Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness.
  • Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine.
  • Cuts pipe, using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine.
  • Threads pipe by hand or by power driven equipment.
  • Dismantles equipment or devices to gain access to and remove defective parts or components.
  • Enters safe vessels, towers, and columns for installation and maintenance of trays and cleaning.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks that require manually moving materials, tools, and equipment and using hand tools and power tools.
  • Performs work area clean-up and safety-related duties.
  • Completes paperwork documenting repair and maintenance activities.
  • Gives suitable assignments to helpers.
  • Works in association with all crafts (electrician, welder, carpenter, or painter) when conditions, schedule, or workload warrants or as directed by management.
  • Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Requires working in operating facilities and observing and abiding by additional safety policies and procedures.
