About The Position

Why choose between doing meaningful work and having a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can have both. That's because MITRE people are committed to tackling our nation's toughest challenges-and we're committed to the long-term well-being of our employees. MITRE is different from most technology companies. We are a not-for-profit corporation chartered to work for the public interest, with no commercial conflicts to influence what we do. The R&D centers we operate for the government create lasting impact in fields as diverse as cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, and enterprise transformation. We're making a difference every day-working for a safer, healthier, and more secure nation and world. Our workplace reflects our values. We offer competitive benefits, exceptional professional development opportunities for career growth, and a culture of innovation that embraces adaptability, collaboration, technical excellence, and people in partnership. If this sounds like the choice you want to make, then choose MITRE - and make a difference with us. Department Summary: The MITRE Corporation's All-Domain Integration (ADI) Department (N174) supports development and delivery of integrated, agile mission capabilities that enable U.S. and coalition forces to operate at the speed of relevance. ADI's focus is to develop joint, all-domain operational concepts, mature these concepts through realizable architectures, and transition capabilities to the warfighter. Our work spans concept exploration, modeling and simulation, experimentation, and fielding. ADI collaborates hand-in-hand with Government sponsors and warfighters to bring domain expertise and state-of-the-art solutions to demanding operational challenges across Combined Joint, All-Domain Command & Control (CJADC2), joint fires, autonomy, and sensor/network integration. Position Summary: The ADI Department is seeking an entry-level Modeling and Simulation Engineer to contribute to the design, implementation, and analysis of models and simulations supporting all-domain operations. You will work alongside experienced engineers and analysts to develop scenarios, build and run models, analyze results, and communicate findings to sponsors. Projects may include mission-level simulations, algorithm prototyping, discrete-event and agent-based simulations for operational workflows, and data-driven analysis to inform decision-making. This role is ideal for early-career engineers who are curious, collaborative, and eager to learn in a mission-focused environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, operations research, or a related discipline.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Department of War security clearance.
  • Foundational coursework or experience in modeling and simulation, numerical methods, probability/statistics, or systems engineering.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used for modeling and analysis (e.g., Python or MATLAB).
  • Ability to analyze data, draw defensible conclusions, and communicate results clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Team-oriented mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn new tools and domains.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Nice To Haves

  • Active U.S. Department of War security clearance.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools or frameworks (e.g., Python, MATLAB, AFSIM).
  • Exposure to discrete-event simulation (e.g., iGrafx, MATLAB, Arena) and/or agent-based or system dynamics modeling.
  • Familiarity with mission-level simulation, sensor or weapon models, or geospatial tools (e.g., QGIS/ArcGIS).
  • Experience with C++ or other compiled languages; Linux; scripting; and software engineering best practices.
  • Understanding of design-of-experiments, Monte Carlo methods, reinforcement learning, or AI-enabled simulation.
  • Prior internship or project work in defense, aerospace, or complex systems.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, test, and document models and simulation components in tools such as Python, MATLAB, or AFSIM.
  • Develop scenarios and experiment designs; execute runs; collect, curate, and analyze results.
  • Apply statistical methods, Monte Carlo techniques, and design-of-experiments to evaluate performance and sensitivity.
  • Summarize and communicate key results to stakeholders through presentations and written reports.
  • Support model verification and validation, configuration management, and reproducibility (e.g., Git).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and sponsors, incorporating stakeholder feedback and operational context.
  • Learn and apply best practices in modeling and simulation, systems engineering, and mission analysis.
