About The Position

The Model Shop Specialist is responsible for performing all duties associated with the role, including troubleshooting and resolving design, equipment, and operational difficulties in collaboration with engineering and supervisory personnel. The specialist supports the production machine shop by providing guidance on operational sequences and tools to achieve desired outcomes. A thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is essential, along with training in CMM operations for tolerancing and positional accuracy. The role involves calculating and writing programs for conversational CNC work centers to fabricate component parts according to engineering specifications. The specialist must handle walk-in work, which may require determining the development of mechanisms and details without compromising quality. Participation in Kaizens, such as SMEDs, is expected, along with developing knowledge of machining characteristics of various materials and metals. The role also requires critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills to identify alternative solutions.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Machine Technology or equivalent certification or 2 years minimum experience as Model Shop Specialist with Kollmorgen preferred.
  • Ten years of combined manual and CNC machining experience required.
  • Certificate in GD&T or equivalent experience in drawing reviews.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Self-motivated and capable of completing tasks without supervision.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of the Model Shop Specialist.
  • Work in a team environment to troubleshoot and resolve design, equipment, and operating difficulties.
  • Support the production machine shop with directions and advice on operational sequences and tools.
  • Gain understanding of GD&T through provided classes.
  • Train with CMM operator for understanding of tolerancing and positional accuracy.
  • Calculate and write programs for conversational CNC work centers.
  • Handle walk-in work to support down machines or urgent jobs.
  • Plan repairs for tools and jigs with complicated nesting and locating features.
  • Participate in Kaizens like SMEDs.
  • Develop knowledge of machining characteristics of various materials.
  • Adapt and improvise tooling where standard tooling is unavailable.
  • Develop general metallurgy knowledge relating to heat treatment of metals.
