The Fleet Mechanic position is responsible for maintaining vehicle/equipment by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements; correcting vehicle/equipment deficiencies; making adjustments and alignments; keeping records. The position works under the direction of the Fleet Manager and is accountable for the tasks of troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining production and facility vehicle/equipment to support daily work activities while maintaining safety objectives and company processes. Available to work Saturdays as needed 8-10 Hour Shifts

Requirements

  • Must be wiling to travel to different branch locations as needed using company provided service truck. May require occasional overnight stay
  • Must have electrical and drivability diagnostic experience- Required
  • 1-3 years of Mechanic experience of Diesel and Gas engines for on-highway vehicles
  • Light/Medium/Heavy Duty Vehicle & Trailer Repair Experience - Required
  • Repeated physical effort including driving for several hours per day or several hours at a time, standing and walking for extended periods of time (more than several hours), loading and unloading equipment into and out of company vehicles, walking on varying ground surfaces and frequently lifting a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Working from elevated platforms, ladders or truck beds
  • Operating hand/power tools, manual dexterity to operate keyboards and smart phones, physical agility to use arms, legs and hands repetitively
  • Working outdoors, working safely under adverse environmental and weather conditions which include high speed traffic areas, heavy construction equipment, fuel fumes and construction substances
  • Comfortable around vehicles moving through work zones and maintaining constant awareness of surroundings on construction site including placement of machinery and equipment, other employees and construction activities
  • Vision adequate to see moving vehicles, read highway construction MOT signs, read instructions, manuals, reports, and construction plans
  • Hearing adequate to hear approaching vehicles, audible commands at a distance from supervisors, conversations in person, and over the telephone
  • Communicating clearly - both written and verbally, ability to complete daily paperwork as required by supervisor
  • Working a flexible schedule which can include day or night shifts, weekends and/or holidays, adjusting to a changing work schedule, working overtime and working individually and as a team with other employees
  • Valid driver's license required, will require passing MVR and controlled substance test, may require background and criminal record check. Knowledge of local driving rules and regulations
  • Must maintain company standards post-employment for background checks, criminal record, driving record and controlled substance/drug testing
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to create accountability and to lead by example
  • Strong team building, decision-making and people management skills
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Certified preferred but not mandatory
  • Off-Highway equipment experience such as front-end loaders, skid steers, mini excavators, forklifts
  • Experience in performing Annual Federal DOT Inspections
  • Class A CDL preferred but not mandatory

Responsibilities

  • Ability to work on construction vehicle/equipment
  • Able to determine vehicle/equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts
  • Keeps vehicle/equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures
  • Corrects vehicle/equipment deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Verifies vehicle/equipment performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
  • Complies with federal and state vehicle/equipment requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintains vehicle/equipment appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Maintains vehicle/equipment records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Keeps shop vehicle/equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
