The Multilingual Learner (MLL) Instructional Coach supports the development and implementation of high-quality, inclusive, and language-rich instruction across grades PreK–12. The coach works collaboratively with educators and school leaders to build capacity in effective instructional practices that simultaneously support content and language development. The MLL Instructional Coach models and promotes asset-based approaches, scaffolding, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching to ensure that all multilingual learners are supported in achieving their full academic potential. The coach plays a critical role in the district’s efforts to close opportunity gaps, promote equity, and provide professional learning opportunities focused on strengthening instruction for multilingual learners. This role requires a deep understanding of language acquisition, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the ability to build trusting, collaborative relationships with educators across all levels. This position is funded through MLL State Funding

  • Design and facilitate professional learning aligned to student data and district goals at the school and district levels.
  • Provide instructional coaching to classroom teachers and support staff through co-teaching, demonstration lessons, side-by-side planning, and/or observation cycles.
  • Use non-evaluative observation and feedback tools to identify trends and support continuous instructional improvement.
  • Collaborate with school-based and district teams to align instructional practices to the WIDA English Language Development Standards and support integration of language and content.
  • Support the implementation of high-quality instructional materials and technology tools (e.g., Imagine Learning, Ellevation, i-Ready).
  • Co-plan and facilitate targeted interventions and scaffolding strategies for MLLs at varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Provide job-embedded coaching and modeling of best practices, including structured academic talk, vocabulary development, and disciplinary literacy.
  • Strengthen educators’ understanding of the relationship between first-language development and additional language acquisition.
  • Support school teams in developing and implementing inclusive practices for differently-abled MLLs in collaboration with Special Education staff.
  • Partner with the Curriculum Director to align content instruction to language goals and MLL needs.
  • Build educator capacity to engage families of MLLs as partners in their child’s learning and advocate for equitable opportunities.
  • Support schools in using qualitative and quantitative data to track MLL growth, inform instruction, and accelerate language acquisition.
  • Participate in professional learning communities, statewide MLL networks, and coaching development aligned with best practices for coaching and adult learning.
  • Attend workshops and conferences to remain current in research and practices for multilingual education.
  • Other duties as assigned by the MLL Director or district leadership.
  • Understanding of Title III requirements, WIDA 2020 ELD Standards, and Rhode Island’s Blueprint for MLL Success
  • Familiarity with formative and summative assessments used for MLLs (ACCESS, WIDA Screener, RICAS, PSAT/SAT)
  • Experience with Ellevation and other platforms supporting MLL services
  • Demonstrated skill in data analysis, instructional planning, and coaching cycles
  • Knowledge of CCSS, high-quality instructional materials, and evidence-based practices for language development
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching
  • Ability to lead adult learning and facilitate effective professional development
  • Deep belief in the linguistic and cultural assets of multilingual learners
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education
  • Valid Rhode Island Teaching Certification with MLL Certification (PreK–12)
  • Experience providing professional development and/or instructional coaching
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and virtual collaboration tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Master’s or advanced degree in Education or a related field
  • Seven years of successful teaching experience
  • Experience in a leadership or coaching role at the school or district level
  • Expertise in implementing language-rich instruction in diverse learning environments
