About the position

The Mission Operations Engineer at Blue Origin plays a crucial role in the In-Space Systems business unit, focusing on the development, manufacturing, and operation of satellite systems. This position involves preparing and executing successful on-orbit flight operations, contributing to the development of operations concepts, and supporting mission readiness activities. The ideal candidate will be a systems-thinker with a strong customer focus, dedicated to building space operations capabilities and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to mission planning, operations concepts, tools, and processes for spacecraft and ground system operation.
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams to develop operations procedures, executables, telemetry displays, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality standards while promoting maximum reuse and backward compatibility.
  • Conduct testing and validation of operations products using hardware and software simulation environments.
  • Support systems engineering in developing spacecraft concepts of operations for efficiency and operability.
  • Create detailed test procedures to validate end-to-end system capabilities.
  • Analyze ground station selection for optimal communications availability.
  • Support communications spectrum licensing efforts with regulatory authorities.
  • Support mission readiness activities including rehearsals and timeline development.
  • Provide on-console support during spacecraft launch and early orbit phase, including shift work.
  • Monitor spacecraft state-of-health across subsystems and perform trending and analyses.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of on-orbit anomalies as part of an anomaly response team.
  • Foster continuous improvement by tracking and implementing lessons-learned.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Electrical, Computer Science, Systems, or related fields.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Expertise in spacecraft operations product development and execution.
  • Real-time support for on-orbit operations.
  • Mission planning, timeline development, and analysis.
  • Spacecraft telemetry trending and analysis.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. in Space Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Direct support for a commercial or government spacecraft operations organization.
  • Experience with multi-manifest spacecraft missions and operations for hosted or separable payloads.
  • Proficiency with command and control scripting languages like Python, SPELL, STOL, or JAS.
  • Experience with virtualized Ground Software and mission planning tools.
  • Experience with scrum methodology and agile product development.
  • Experience in the full development lifecycle of space systems' ground segments.
  • Experience designing operational readiness tests integrated with simulators.
  • Experience with operational fault and anomaly management.
  • Experience performing system safety analyses.
