About The Position

The Minor Shelter Life Skills Manager, under the supervision of the Program Manager, is responsible for providing direct supervision of youth (ages 12-17) at the Urban Peak Minor Shelter program. This role involves ongoing engagement, assessment, intervention, and ensuring client safety by delivering appropriate and effective program services in a positive, trauma-informed environment. Key duties include supervising youth according to facility rules, conducting youth intakes and assessments, providing crisis phone counseling, collecting client data, documentation, and file maintenance. The manager also supports the Minor Shelter Case Manager with discharge information and communicates with the case manager and youth's families. The position aims for program termination within 21 days, focusing on family reunification or referral to other care systems. The role emphasizes physical and emotional safety for both youth and staff, working with a diverse population of homeless youth with varying mental and physical health needs and trauma histories. Urban Peak is a non-profit providing comprehensive services for youth experiencing homelessness, founded on trauma-informed care and Positive Youth Development principles.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of college; OR a high school diploma or equivalent AND one (1) year of experience in the human services field
  • Able to connect and work effectively with a diverse, resistant street youth population
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment, set clear and appropriate boundaries with youth
  • Knowledge and understanding issues of the homeless adolescent population, mental health issues, and substance abuse among high-risk young adults
  • Provide services that are trauma informed, appropriate, and effective
  • Problem solving skills (multi-tasking, assessment, organization and prioritization)
  • Team oriented and able to coordinate with various departments and staff
  • Must be QMAP certified or eligible for QMAP certification
  • Must be computer proficient and possess experience of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Understanding of the provision of and commitment to trauma-informed care and positive youth development
  • Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak’s auto liability policy in order to conduct business on behalf of the agency or transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle and/or an approved personal vehicle
  • Must pass both federal and state background checks
  • Must pass pre-employment physical
  • Must pass pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) screening
  • Provide proof of education (HS Diploma OR Official Transcripts)

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision of youth at the Urban Peak Minor Shelter program
  • Engage, assess, and intervene with youth on an ongoing basis
  • Ensure client safety by providing appropriate and effective program services in a positive environment
  • Supervise youth in accordance with facility rules and regulations
  • Conduct youth intakes
  • Perform assessments
  • Provide crisis phone counseling
  • Collect client data
  • Perform documentation and file maintenance
  • Support the Minor Shelter Case Manager with completing Discharge information
  • Communicate with the Minor Shelter Case Manager and with the youth’s family, if applicable
  • Work with the youth and Shelter team towards program termination within 21 days of entry
  • Assist with reporting maintenance issues
  • Ensure that the program is facilitated in a manner that meets Urban Peak’s mission
  • Ensure that interactions, interventions, and environments at Urban Peak are trauma-informed and emphasize the physical and emotional safety of youth and staff
  • Accurately document admission records and actual services received by clients
  • Collect and maintain accurate data on an ongoing basis
  • Document relevant and significant events that occur during the shift in the Communication Log
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with other staff regarding clients
  • Ensure client confidentiality through the safe and secure storage of client information
  • Complete thorough intakes in a manner that begins to establish comfort and trusting relationships
  • During intake, assess the level of need and make recommendations regarding youth’s involvement in Urban Peak
  • Establish plans with youth, ensure follow through, and make appropriate referrals
  • Provide milieu supervision and work to ensure the safety of the youth and their environment
  • Assure that youth maintain cleanliness of the shelter environment
  • Provide direction and support to youth on the completion of daily chores and other milieu activities
  • Maintain a welcoming presence and support youth who come into the shelter
  • Collect and record necessary intake information to reflect the needs of clients
  • Assess appropriateness of client admission to shelter and forward data to intake supervisor for additional follow-up
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support, including verbal and physical altercations, and phone counseling, as needed
  • Facilitate group activities and discussions
  • Manage a limited caseload as the primary case manager (provided that the Counselor has the appropriate credentials)
  • Attend additional case management meetings as required
