About The Position

The Mine Geologist is responsible for the collection of geologic data, geologic modeling, exploration drilling, and dissemination of data maps and reports in support of underground coal mining. This role involves in-mine geologic mapping and sampling, data management for geologic modeling, and assisting with both in-mine and surface exploration activities. The geologist will prepare geologic reports and maps, interpret research data, and make recommendations for further study or action. Additionally, the position requires consultation with senior geologists and other staff on the interpretation of field exploration results and participation in environmental studies as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geophysics required.
  • 1 to 5 years underground coal mining experience with a diverse background in geology, engineering, exploration, and/or surveying.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Carlson geologic modeling software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently in the field including GPS operation, mapping, and driving 4WD.
  • Ability to work independently in an underground environment.
  • Ability to drive standard transmission vehicles.
  • Good planning and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and self-supporting.
  • Ability to obtain MSHA underground hazard training.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communications (oral and written) skills.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Excel and Word are required.

Responsibilities

  • In-mine geologic mapping and sampling, including coal measured section, roof and floor lithology, longwall face profiles, structural fault mapping, and characterization of coal seam discontinuities.
  • Data management and entry for geologic modeling, including lithology, coal quality parameters, and structure.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate geologic models for all mined coal seams, including coal quality parameters and structural data with maps, grids, and reports using the Carlson software suite.
  • Assist with in-mine exploration, including conventional and horizontal directional drilling, and geophysical surveys.
  • Assist with surface exploration, including core drilling, core logging, and geophysical surveys.
  • Preparation of geologic reports and maps, interpretation of research data, and recommendations for further study or action.
  • Consult with Sr. Geologist, operations, and engineering staff on the interpretation of field exploration results.
  • Conduct or participate in environmental studies as needed.
