About The Position

Build or assemble, repair, or maintain machinery in a factory, plant, or construction site including steel or iron structural pieces and components. Transform metal pieces into functional elements that meet the guidelines of the project by cutting materials and using fabrication techniques. Set-up, assemble, or disassemble job-specific machinery, equipment, iron or metal that includes selecting proper gear and equipment based on the size, weight, dimensions, and area of movement that is necessary to safely secure machinery, tools, and equipment for installation, disassembly, relocation and/or transportation. Control, manipulate, fabricate, and repair machinery, iron/metal and support structures. Requires the use of hand, flag, and/or verbal signals to communicate to operators and others. Millwrights may drive a commercial vehicle, perform maintenance or welding/fabrication functions, assist in warehouse activities, or perform other tasks as necessary when not completing millwright duties.

Requirements

Must be mechanically proficient and have his/her own tools that are appropriate for this trade.
Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
HS diploma or equivalent necessary.
Four (4) years of experience required.
Able to give clear direction, supervise and/or oversee the work of others. Able to closely follow instruction and articulate instructions to others.
Visualize or predict the outcome of the job by using deductive and inductive reasoning.
Ability to use precision measuring tools and equipment including hand, power, and pneumatic tools. Must be able to read or use a tape measure, levels, use welding and cutting tools, as necessary.
Correctly estimate weight-bearing ability of tools and equipment.
Reading comprehension to include blueprints, schematics, or technical manuals as required.
Perform mathematical functions including fractions, decimals, and percents. A strong understanding of geometry and/or algebra may be necessary.
Familiar with various hand or flag signals including the use and meaning.
Willing to learn, know, and follow safety requirements, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment.
Valid driver’s license may be required for certain positions.

Responsibilities

Install and maintain machinery and equipment using hoists, lift trucks, hand tools, and power tools.
Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
Align machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, levels, lasers, and plumb bobs.
Level/ establish centerline, using straightedge, levels, and transit.
Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.
Dismantle machinery and equipment for shipment to installation site, usually performing installation and maintenance work as part of team.
Construct foundation for machines, using hand tools and building materials such as wood, cement, grout and/ or steel.
Replace defective parts of machine or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts, adjust equipment to ensure optimal performance and replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts.
Ensure assigned work is understood prior to commencing.
Visually inspect and test materials to ensure safety and reliability.
Align, level, and anchor machinery, equipment
Use hand and/or power tools to attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare for moving. May also secure machinery or equipment to prevent movement.
Select appropriate gear such as cables, pulleys, vices, winches, etc. according to load weights and sizes, work area, and job specifications.
Be aware of obstacles, surrounding structures, barriers or objects and the location of other people.
Signal or verbally communicate with workers and others engaged in hoisting, suspending, and moving loads to ensure the safety of workers and materials.
Manipulate rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear to move or support materials, heavy equipment and/or machinery.
Control movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chain falls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment.
Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, and/or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
Assist in fabrication, set up, and repair of rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
Dismantle, inspect, clean, organize and store equipment after use.
Run, operate, maneuver, navigate, or drive vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, ariel lifts.
Perform all other duties as necessary and assigned.
Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and materials.
Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools.
Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment — running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles.
Controlling Machines and Processes — using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes (not including computers or vehicles).
