Requirements

  • Minimum: High School Diploma
  • 1 year healthcare or food service related experience

Responsibilities

  • The Milk Lab Technician is responsible for safe preparation of infant feedings in accordance with current Human Milk Banking of North America (HMBANA) Guidelines and department policies.
  • The technician is responsible for maintaining the aseptic environment of the Milk Lab.
  • The technician is responsible for collection, storage, and inventory of breast milk.
  • The Milk Lab Technician prepares feedings of breast milk and formula daily according to orders, recipes, and department policies.
  • The technician is responsible for cleaning and stocking the Milk Lab.
  • Maintenance of the Milk Lab and Feed Preparation: Primarily responsible for maintaining the lab so that breast milk and fortified formula feeds can be prepared in a safe environment. The technician is responsible for following the policies of the UAMS NICU Milk Lab in accordance with HMBANA Guidelines. The technician will assist in the training of new staff members. The technician performs duties to ensure the Milk Lab operates in the safest manner.
  • Equipment and Supply Clerk: Assist with the daily operations of the milk lab by ensuring that equipment is in working order and that adequate supplies are available to complete necessary tasks. Keep the Milk Lab stocked with essential supplies. Maintain cleaning protocols per department policy. Keep breast milk refrigerators and freezers clean and organized. Communicate maintenance and supply concerns to Milk Lab Manager as needed.
  • Ancillary Support: Make copies of paperwork as needed. Distribute copy of daily MOM Log to the Lactation Department and NICU dietitians. Ensure freezer door plans are correctly labeled with patient names. Ensure freezer drawers are labeled correctly with label of contents (patient label or donor milk lot number). Maintain current patient label book and ensure it is organized by correct room/bed assignment daily. Ensure pod refrigerator bins are labeled with correct patient and room number daily.
  • Patient, Guest and Staff Relations: Communicate with patients, guests and staff in an appropriate manner. Answer questions in a helpful manner. Refer parents of patients to the lactation consultant or dietitian if necessary.
  • Customer Service: Interact with and assist the public in a professional and friendly manner as needed. Demonstrate effective communication skills. Communicate accurate and complete information. Maintain strict confidentiality when necessary. Demonstrate positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments. Follow the Core Concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care and the Basic Code of Conduct Guidelines. Assist internal and external stakeholders as needed with exceptional customer service.
