About The Position

The Military School Counselor and Child Youth Counselor position at Magellan Health involves providing comprehensive Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of military service members and their families. The role includes working in Child Development Centers and Department of Defense (DoDEA) schools, offering non-medical counseling, training, and wellness presentations. Counselors will engage with children and youth, parents, and school personnel to address behavioral health issues and ensure the program meets the needs of military installations and schools.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited Graduate Program in a Mental Health related field.
  • Valid unrestricted independent counseling license (LPC, LCSW, LMFT) from a state or territory.
  • Minimum of two years of post-licensure clinical experience.
  • Intermediate-level competencies in technology and software (Microsoft Suite, video-conferencing platforms).
  • Ability to engage and communicate effectively with military members and children.
  • Ability to traverse various terrains and work in outdoor conditions on military installations.
  • Understanding and empathy for service members and their families.
  • Ability to develop trusting relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Pass a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) Clearance and other background checks.

  • Experience working in a school setting for school counselor positions.
  • Familiarity with military culture and family dynamics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling to eligible children and youth of service members.
  • Conduct assessments, brief counseling, and consultations, and develop action plans and referrals to resources.
  • Deliver training and health and wellness presentations, and participate in health fairs and other activities.
  • Maintain accurate reporting of counselor activity data while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources focused on children and youth.
  • Work closely with installation and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to provide CYB services.
  • Manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to DoD protocol.
  • Communicate with Regional Supervisor and participate in regular supervision and training.
  • Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and pilot programs as assigned.
