About The Position

Teacher Apprentices observe and learn from classroom teachers. They will co-teach in the classroom, support teachers with tutoring, grading, and individual or small group student instruction and provide substitute coverage for teachers. Depending on school needs and previous candidate experience, they may also teach their own class of students, allowing for direct teaching experience within a more limited teaching load. Teacher Apprentices will also offer teacher support with a variety of work inside and outside of the classroom, including teaching Enrichment classes, organizing student events, and developing mentoring relationships with students. By taking part in summer and school-year professional development, as well as regular meetings with an instructional coach, Teacher Apprentices will have many opportunities to gain experience and develop their teaching skills. This role is a one year role, with the option to renew for one additional year depending on performance. The goal for all Teacher Apprentices is to become a classroom teacher within 1 - 2 years after learning through hands-on experience what it means to be a teacher at Inwood Academy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in specific subject matter or education preferred
  • Enrollment in a Bachelors program with a major or minor in Education with a minimum of 60 credits is required.
  • Some teaching or tutoring experience is preferred
  • Experience supporting teachers through coaching or directing
  • Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Experience and general understanding of educational administration

Responsibilities

  • Teach classes on behalf of Deans and teacher-leaders who are observing other teachers
  • Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school
  • Teach one class or small groups of students
  • Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year
  • Develop teaching skills to potentially become a full-time teacher at the school
  • Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
  • Observe teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management
  • Meet regularly with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction
  • Teach or help coordinate an elective class
  • Build effective relationships amongst teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture
  • Foster a school climate that supports the school's mission statement; promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents.
