About The Position

Middle School Mathematics (2026-27) Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school of 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking a full-time Middle School Mathematics Teacher beginning with the 2026 - 27 school year. Middle School Mathematics Teacher teaches math from 5 th through 8 th grade students in courses ranging from Math 5 to Honors Geometry. This Middle School Mathematics Teacher instructs students in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Mathematics Department Chair. This teacher will inspire a love of and appreciation for mathematics in our students. The Middle School Mathematics teacher will work to develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a degree or certification in field (Mathematics, Math Education).
  • At least two years of experience teaching mathematics or applied mathematics in a secondary or post-secondary setting.
  • Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as professionalism and the ability to be self-motivated and punctual.
  • Proficiency in a variety of instructional strategies, including inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and other student-centered approaches, to support mastery of mathematical content and encourage deep engagement with mathematical concepts.
  • Appreciate and enjoy interacting with energetic Middle School age students and partnering with their families in their student's academic development.
  • Have a strong desire to work in a professional academic environment that strives to develop and deliver a strong mathematics curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of our ever-changing student body.
  • Show evidence of organization, self-motivation, and punctuality.
  • Show evidence of a desire and willingness to contribute to the life of an independent school.

Nice To Haves

  • The School highly values advanced degrees, such as Master's and Doctorates, and considers them not only in determining compensation but also when selecting and prioritizing candidates.
  • Experience teaching in a middle school setting is preferred, with independent school experience as a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in mathematics classes in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives, making effective use of technology, textbooks, and other instructional materials as appropriate.
  • Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
  • Create and design interactive lesson plans, employing a variety of instructional techniques and assessments, which meet the needs of a diverse learning community.
  • Collaborate with other math department members to instill a community of reflective, talented, and thoughtful people who are passionate about their work as teachers.
  • Work with students to develop a love for learning, a sense of academic integrity, and a thoughtful work ethic.
  • Appreciate and enjoy interacting with adolescents and partnering with families in the student's academic development.
  • Inspire a love of and appreciation for mathematics in our students.
  • Participate as an active and positive team member within the Math Department, the Middle School faculty, and the School community as a whole.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students and participate in various Middle School activities such as committees, division level meetings, clubs and organizations.
  • Supervise students in numerous activities, functions and circumstances at the School.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
  • The ability to implement classroom management techniques that foster academic achievement, personal responsibility, intellect and individuality within students.
  • A record of exceptional collaboration with colleagues to provide the best curriculum and instruction possible for students.
