About The Position

The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a full-time Classroom Teacher. We are a Preschool - Grade 8 progressive, independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of approximately 420 students. Position Summary: The position centers on sixth grade math instruction, student advising, and close collaboration with the 6th grade team to create a coherent, thematically linked experience for students at a pivotal moment in their adolescent development. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in a related field preferred
  • 4+ years of lead math teaching experience strongly preferred
  • A genuine orientation toward progressive philosophy and constructivist teaching methods
  • Deep understanding of child development across social, emotional, and intellectual domains; Responsive Classroom training a plus
  • The ability and desire to create a warm, nurturing classroom where middle schoolers feel known, challenged, and supported
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills - with students, families, and colleagues
  • A demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging as living, integral dimensions of curriculum and community
  • Familiarity with various teaching programs such as Responsive Classroom, Bridges in Mathematics, and/or The Connected Mathematics Project
  • A real passion for mathematics and for helping young people discover that they are capable, curious mathematical thinkers

Responsibilities

  • Deliver intentional, progressive 6th-grade math instruction grounded in constructivist practice
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, learning resource specialists, and other team members to support diverse learners and build engaging, thematically integrated curriculum
  • Plan and lead weekly Outdoor Days each fall and spring, and chaperone two overnight camping trips per year
  • Teach middle school wide academic Intensives courses during the winter season and middle school wide mini-courses in the spring
  • Build genuine, respectful relationships with students that support their growth inside and outside the classroom
  • Partner with families through clear, frequent, and culturally competent communication
  • Engage in a range of activities for school-sponsored and individually-sought professional development with curiosity and a commitment to continued growth, including a periodic process of growth-oriented feedback and evaluation
  • Contribute actively to school-wide initiatives, including other duties as assigned
  • Faculty are encouraged to partner with the Auxiliary Programming team to deliver up to two weeks of summer camp instruction, as well as extra-curricular club facilitation throughout the academic year. Participation in auxiliary programming supports the educational mission and helps sustain resources that benefit the entire TPS community. We value the unique expertise our teachers bring to these programs, and additional compensation is generally provided in recognition of this additional commitment.
