About The Position

Middle School Language Arts and History Teacher Falk Laboratory School, a co-educational K-8 laboratory school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, seeks a full-time, experienced, and dynamic school librarian for the 2026-2027 academic year, beginning in August 2026. Candidates should have successful teaching experience in middle or high school English/ Language Arts and History/Social Studies classrooms. The educator filling these roles will be responsible for continuing to develop a program that features Progressive ideas about Language Arts and History instruction. Supports sixth-grade students' executive functioning and successful transition to MS by explicitly teaching organization, time management, note-taking, and self-advocacy skills; scaffolding long-term History and English projects; partnering closely with advisors and families to build student confidence, independence, and academic routines. The successful candidate will have a strong vision for dynamic approaches to Language Arts and History education, strong collaborative skills, and a willingness to support educational research. Strong skills in oral and written communication will be required to frame and present the complex world of Language Arts pedagogy to a variety of audiences.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in teaching or a related field is preferred.
  • Current Pennsylvania state instructional certification or equivalent is required
  • Either middle or high school teaching experience or equivalent coursework are required
  • Offer of employment is contingent on the candidate satisfactorily obtaining and passing the following before commencement of appointment: Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check.
  • Candidates must also submit proof of a negative TB test before their first day of work.
  • As Act 168 of 2014 requires, the candidate must satisfy the requirements on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Education Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Release Form.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for teaching students for 170 school days during your contract period.
  • Falk teachers are expected to contribute to program areas, including supporting program admissions, engaging in program development and revision, and meeting any PDE requirements (including accreditation).
  • Contribute in other substantive ways to their department as needed.
  • Participating in department and schoolwide faculty meetings
  • Securing and maintaining all necessary clearances (e.g., PA Child Abuse History), which require updates every 5 years
  • Being a collaborative partner with other faculty members
