About The Position

The Middle School Girls Basketball Assistant Coach is responsible for supporting the head coach with practices and attending basketball games during the season. This role supports the athletic and personal development of student-athletes by promoting teamwork, skill-building, and sportsmanship in a positive and inclusive environment. The Middle School Girls Basketball Assistant Coach collaborates closely with the head coach to align with school values and ensure a safe, engaging experience for all participants.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in education, coaching, or a related field preferred.
1+ years of experience coaching basketball, preferably with middle school –age students.
Knowledge of youth athletic development, including age-appropriate skill building and sportsmanship.
Demonstrated ability to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive team environment.
Ability to actively supervise student-athletes both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions.
Physical ability to meet the demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 pounds and engaging in activities such as bending, crouching, or sitting on the ground.
Readiness to obtain First Aid and CPR certification, and maintain throughout employment
Successful completion of required background checks in accordance with school policy and state regulations.
Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, flexible, and growth-oriented mindset.
Proficiency with basic technology tools and a willingness to learn school-specific systems.
Commitment to the mission, values, and community of STS.

Responsibilities

Supports the head coach with all basketball practices for middle school.
Attends all scheduled games, including travel to away games, while positively representing St. Thomas School.
Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and individual skill development.
Assists with teaching age-appropriate basketball fundamentals, techniques, and strategies.
Partners with the head coach to support program goals and team culture.
Ensures the safety, supervision, and well-being of all student-athletes.
Supports player growth aligned with program expectations and core competencies.
Communicates clearly with players, families, and the school community about schedules, expectations, and team progress
Helps with equipment, as well as court set up and cleanup for practices and games.
Actively engages in the life of the school and contributes to community-wide events and programs.
Upholds and models the mission, values, and strategic priorities of STS.
Demonstrates respect for diverse perspectives and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Maintains confidentiality and handles sensitive information with discretion.
Adheres to school policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and After-School Programs.
