Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in English/History or a closely related field is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Rich knowledge of reading and writing pedagogy, literary analysis, English grammar, and World and United States history.
  • Experience with and passion for teaching English and history at the Middle School level.
  • Facility with various teaching tools, comfort with designing courses, and fluency in various modes of inquiry.
  • Experience with advising students.
  • Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining a culture of access and equity in English and history education.
  • Dedication to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students.
  • Ability to foster creative thinking and problem-solving in students.
  • Ability to create a positive classroom environment that is safe, welcoming, and at the same time, intellectually challenging.
  • Robust interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • A full course load comprises four classes, including teaching two Middle School English classes, one Middle School History class, and providing substitute coverage within the Middle School to fulfill the fourth class requirement.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of approximately 10 students.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally on the development and execution of Middle School Project Week.
  • Fulfill an additional 'plus one' requirement as assigned by the Middle School Director.
  • Fulfill any additional duties as assigned by the Middle School Director and/or Middle School History and English Department Chairs.
  • Participate in all required meetings, including faculty division meetings, scheduled collaboration times, professional development days, and beginning and end-of-year meetings.
  • Participate in all required professional development activities.
  • Provide extra support and supervision for students during flex and community times.
