About The Position

Uncommon Schools is seeking a passionate Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) teacher who is dedicated to fostering an engaging and inclusive classroom culture. The role emphasizes literature, writing, and discourse, equipping students with the skills to express their voices confidently. Teachers will utilize research-based instructional strategies to enhance reading comprehension and promote student agency, preparing them for high school and beyond.

Requirements

  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students.
  • Self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes.
  • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities preferred.
  • Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields of study.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins.
  • Must pass state teacher certification tests to meet MA state requirements after hiring.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in teaching English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices.

Responsibilities

  • Empower students by teaching an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum that seeks equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Guide students in analyzing literary and non-narrative texts, assessing an author's purpose, and writing in various genres.
  • Create an inclusive and safe environment that encourages students to express their authentic voices.
  • Facilitate student-led discourse around meaningful questions and texts.
  • Meet weekly with the principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in the classroom.
  • Build positive relationships with students and partner with their families to support learning needs.
  • Engage in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to cultivate community and encourage student achievement.
  • Collaborate with grade level teams to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.
