About The Position

The Middle School Counselor position is a remote role that requires a New Mexico Middle School Counselor License. Candidates must provide proof of their New Mexico license application within 7 days of the start date if their current certification is from another state. The position emphasizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success through a comprehensive school counseling program. The counselor will guide students in their academic success, social and emotional development, and career and college planning. The role is full-time, requiring the ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week, and maintain a professional home office without distractions during work hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years of experience in counseling and/or advisement.
  • School Counselor License.
  • Ability to clear required background check.

Responsibilities

  • Helps all students plan for postsecondary options including education, military enlistment, or workforce employment.
  • Implements academic achievement strategies.
  • Teaches students to manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills.
  • Focuses on college and career readiness for students and families.
  • Meets quarterly with all students on caseload to review graduation plans and post-secondary options.
  • Delivers classroom instruction based on student success standards.
  • Reviews transcripts and academic documentation for new and returning students.
  • Collaborates with teaching staff to develop a four-year graduation plan and audits student schedules.
  • Assists students in course placement and recommendations for Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
  • Analyzes student data to develop data-driven intervention action plans.
  • Provides short-term counseling and referrals for long-term support.
  • Supports standardized testing programs, parent education, and staff development.
  • Advocates for students at individual education plan meetings.
  • Focuses on goal setting and academic planning for college and career readiness.
  • Travels up to 20% of the time for professional development and student testing.
