South Dakota School Counselor Certificate. EXPERIENCE DESIRED: Previous experience in middle and/or high school setting PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; frequent repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers, scheduling, sitting, speaking, walking, talking and writing are required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create positive relationships. Strong organizational skills. Ability to plan, organize, and work collaboratively with other teams. CERTIFICATION This position requires a valid South Dakota certificate. Questions about SD teaching certification: South Dakota Department of Education YOUTH SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION TRAINING South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71 requires certified educators to complete at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years. Compliance is verified through district accreditation reviews. You will be required to provide your most recent certificate of completion prior to starting employment with the Sioux Falls School District. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES Provide services to students to intervene in a wide range of personal/social concerns to help students become and remain successful at school in the Axtell Building programs. Provides counseling to individuals and small groups with personal concerns. Assess students for emotional functioning, barriers to academic performance, peer issues, suicidal/homicidal ideation, and similar issues. Counsels students through the development of postsecondary and career plans. Consults with teachers, staff, parents, and other significant stakeholders regarding the developmental needs of students. Participates in building problem-solving team meetings and supports a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTMDSS) model for delivering academic and social emotional information. Coordinates and implements high/middle school counseling curriculum in the classroom. Monitors and effectively communicates with parents about student progress. Conducts credit checks with students to assist with scheduling. Maintains the confidentiality of students and their families. Refers students with significant challenges to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents. Plans, evaluates, and revises the building counseling program. Builds interpersonal relationships and establishes positive rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents. Pursues professional growth. Performs other duties as assigned.
