The Midday Teacher at Bank Street School for Children plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of preschool to first-grade classrooms. This part-time position, requiring 3-4 hours of work per day (up to 20 hours per week), is designed to provide coverage for head and associate teachers during their breaks and preparation time. The Midday Teacher will engage in various classroom routines, which may include transitions between activities, work time, lunch, rest periods, and other age-appropriate activities as outlined in the weekly schedule. In this role, the Midday Teacher will be responsible for setting up materials for children, preparing snacks and lunches, and cleaning up after these activities. Additionally, the teacher will work with small groups of children, fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment. The Midday Teacher is expected to participate actively as a member of a collaborative teaching team, sharing strategies and information to maintain a healthy classroom community. Building relationships with students is essential, as the Midday Teacher will help ensure that children treat each other well and remain focused on their tasks. Classroom management skills will be necessary to maintain an energetic and safe environment, particularly during transitions in the hallways and during various activities throughout the day. The Midday Teacher will also participate in specials such as music, movement, gym, or library, supporting both the children and specialist teachers as directed by the classroom teachers.
