Position Description The Microbiologist supports Applied Medical by performing microbiology research, laboratory testing, and quality assurance activities that advance biological sciences and medical device development. The Microbiologist contributes to laboratory operations, quality system compliance, and method execution that enables accurate, timely, and reliable microbiological data. This role performs microbiology testing, oversees laboratory processes, and supports nonclinical study inspections under 21 Code of Federal Regulations part 58.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, or a related scientific field, with previous laboratory experience.
  • Bring hands on experience performing microbiology or biology laboratory work, including aseptic technique, organism handling, genetic identification, sequencing, and Gram staining.
  • Apply technical knowledge of microbiological techniques, laboratory procedures, test standards, and regulatory expectations.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, detail oriented, and methodical work habits.
  • Communicate effectively with internal partners, customers, and laboratory stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and produce clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Manage multiple projects by prioritizing tasks, meeting timelines, and coordinating with team members.
  • Understand and stay current with relevant regulations, standards, and guidance documents.
  • Apply sound decision making, technical writing skills, and problem-solving methods.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrate experience in Good Laboratory Practice accredited environments or within a Quality Assurance Unit
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 and 21 CFR part 58.
  • Perform investigations, root cause analysis, and protocol execution.

Responsibilities

  • Implement laboratory testing, workflows, and microbiology procedures that support Biological Sciences operations.
  • Guide and coordinate training for Associate Microbiologists and Microbiology Laboratory Technicians.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment by coordinating installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Produce, review, and maintain documentation for laboratory testing, quality records, and internal reporting.
  • Implement laboratory safety standards and support safety processes related to equipment, data sheets, and inspections.
  • Execute the laboratory quality management program, including test method adherence, process documentation, and compliance tracking.
  • Review nonclinical laboratory study protocols and reports in support of Quality Assurance Unit responsibilities under 21 Code of Federal Regulations part 58.
  • Inspect nonclinical laboratory studies and prepare written status reports for laboratory management and study directors.
  • Manage laboratory supplies, inventories, and environmental standards to support efficient daily operations.
  • Recommend improvements to laboratory testing procedures, workflow efficiency, and equipment utilization.
