About The Position

The Microbiologist Manager at the Public Health Lab of East Texas (PHLET) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and ensuring the quality of laboratory services. This role includes compliance with federal regulations, staff training, and collaboration with various clinical areas to maintain high standards in microbiology testing and public health education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in microbiology or molecular diagnostics.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Combination of education and experience may be accepted.

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in microbiology or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program, including biosafety and biosecurity measures.
  • Serve as Alternate Responsible Official and CLIA Technical Supervisor, preparing the laboratory for compliance inspections.
  • Support staff in performing complex microbiology test methods and monitor quality control and instrument maintenance.
  • Develop SOPs and training documents, and train staff in high complexity assays.
  • Communicate regulatory changes to the Laboratory Response Network and provide training for packaging and shipping.
  • Manage department operations efficiently, overseeing staff and supplies to ensure quality service.
  • Assist in teaching medical students about public health laboratory topics and microbiology.
  • Oversee fellows in training related to laboratory projects involving complex methodologies.
  • Prepare and lead tours for guests, ensuring safety training is provided.
  • Assist in preparing information and laboratory space for resident rotations and instruction on laboratory topics.
  • Prepare data for annual budgets and collaborate with clinical areas to establish positive relationships.
  • Conduct interviews, employee selection, evaluations, and mentoring of personnel.
