About The Position

The Microbiologist II position at the City of Corpus Christi involves supervising and conducting serological and molecular tests on clinical and marine water samples. The role includes overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and preparing reports and budgets for health department programs. The position also requires maintaining security clearance and responding to public health emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Chemical Science, Biomedical Science, Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Public Health with at least 16 college semester credit hours of biology.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a technical supervisor to comply with TNI/CLIA standards.
  • Must obtain FBI security clearance for CDC Select Agent Program within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and train technical personnel to perform bacteriological and chemical analysis of clinical and marine water samples.
  • Assure compliance with The NELAC Institute (TNI) standards for environmental water testing and communicate results with the General Land Office.
  • Complete inventory, ordering, and stocking supplies.
  • Complete regulatory testing and serve as technical manager in the water quality program.
  • Serve as the Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) or Responsible Official (RO) for the Select Agent Program under the CDC.
  • Report any problems to appropriate local, state, or federal agencies.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing as required to maintain laboratory response network standard operating procedures.
  • Advise hospital laboratories on proper collection, packaging, labeling and shipping procedures for samples suspected of containing hazardous agents.
  • Maintain BSL-3 training certification and respond to public health emergencies when called.
  • Perform highly complex analyses on materials suspected of containing bioterrorism select agents and report results to relevant authorities.
