About The Position

Maryville High School seeks a dedicated and compassionate High School Counselor to join our student support team. In this role, you will serve as a trusted mentor and advocate for our diverse student population, providing comprehensive academic guidance, college and career counseling, and social-emotional support. You will work collaboratively with teachers, families, and community partners to help students navigate challenges, set meaningful goals, and prepare for success after high school. Requirements

  • Current Tennessee Counseling Certification with endorsement in grades 9–12

Nice To Haves

  • Previous high school counseling experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Academic & Career Planning
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive counseling programs for grades 9–12
  • Guide students in creating and updating four-year educational plans and post-secondary plans
  • Facilitate new student orientations and transition programs for incoming ninth and tenth graders
  • Assist juniors and seniors in graduation planning and status evaluation
  • Interpret standardized test results and college entrance exams to students, families, and staff
  • Provide scholarship and financial aid guidance
  • Support career exploration through career assessments, career information systems, and vocational planning
  • Individual & Group Counseling
  • Conduct goal-oriented counseling sessions addressing identified student needs (academic challenges, attendance, behavior, peer relationships, family issues, mental health concerns)
  • Facilitate small group counseling on relevant topics
  • Serve as a student advocate in school decisions and processes
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance student support effectiveness
  • Conduct and participate in student services staffing meetings and intervention team processes, including leading 504 meetings for students
  • Facilitate parent-teacher-student conferences and parent education programs
  • Coordinate with in-district and community agencies (school nurses, psychologists, social services, physicians)
  • Participate in professional in-service programs for faculty
  • Program Evaluation & Professional Development
  • Participate in annual counseling program evaluation and planning
  • Maintain the counseling department master calendar
  • Document and evaluate guidance activities
  • Pursue ongoing professional development through workshops, conferences, and professional associations
  • Contribute to school goals and initiatives that enhance the educational environment
