Current enrolled Northeastern University students only. This will be a full-time position with a requirement of 36-40 hours per week. Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. In order to serve the Northeastern University nursing community better, Massachusetts General Hospital provided a list of Clinical units looking to support a Nursing Students Coop. The duties of Patient Care Associate Trainee (PCA) include: Assisting the healthcare team; the PCA promotes a safe and caring environment for patients under the guidance of an RN. PCA assists patients with daily living needs, monitoring & reading vital signs, drawing blood, and obtaining EKGs. Responds to patient requests in a timely manner, safeguarding patient confidentiality, monitoring patient safety, and always communicating in a respectful manner. Requirements

  • Must have previous Coop or Clinical experience for all Intensive Care units, which include : Multidisciplinary ICU Neuro ICU Medical ICU Cardiac Surgical ICU Pediatrics ICU
  • CPR: Either American Red Cross or and American Heart Association for Health Care Providers is required. Any other provider of CPR certification will not be accepted.
  • Education Level: Enrolled sophomore to senior nursing students
  • Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No
  • Licenses and Credentials Basic Life Support [BLS] - Generic - HR Only preferred
  • Patient Care Experience 0-1 year preferred
  • Understands his/her role in relation to providing patient care activities.
  • Understands hospital, division and unit policies and procedures and utilizes these in providing care.
  • Communicates effectively with the staff and all members of interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Communicates effectively with patients/significant others in providing patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.
  • Completes all documentation in the medical record as required.
  • Interacts with patients and their families effectively.
  • Helps patients with a number of basic hygiene tasks.
  • This may include bathing and dressing patients, helping them use the toilet if needed and feeding them.
  • Assists with helping patients turn and reposition themselves in bed as needed and help them move between the bed and a wheelchair if they use one.
  • Listens to any health concerns patients may have and report those concerns to the nurses.
